Slugs are edited with the “Permalink:…” field next to the title. This field doesn’t show up for brand new posts until the first autosave. We’re considering how to better present it for new posts.
Nope, I don’t see the Permalink section in a new post or a published post. Are you sure that’s there? I saw that section on the screenshots but I couldn’t see it myself.
And by the way, I don’t know how to use Trac or Ideas, so I should ask you here: Is AJAX post saving so hard? There’s already a plugin out there and I think it should become a core feature. I also think drop down menus should also be a core feature. I also thi… OK I should learn to use Ideas :).

I cannot edit the slugs anywhere! And yes, I deactivated all my plugins and checked twice.

Baris, I’m guessing your “urgent design bug” is because you have quite a few categories or tags, that issue is filed in trac.
