Summary of Jan 7th 2010 dev chat
Ryan updated us on the status of the merge of code from WPMU. So far we have the MU specific files in and are working on fixing those up and improving the code.
We have created a new Component in trac for the Multisite feature and we have a report in trac for tickets in this component or tagged with the multisite keyword
There was a brief discussion about the merge process and when it might be finished enough for people to test out. We also talked about making an alpha preview release available for people to test out migrating from WPMU.
We had a brief discussion about core/canonical plugins and getting involved in their development
We have two candidates at the moment to “beta” test the process and idea – The first is the already announced health-check plugin and the second of is the removal of the post-by-email functionality from the core and the reworking of it as a plugin to allow for more people to get involved directly in its development.
If you would like to help create either of these plugins then please email me using this contact form
Next we talked about the scope for 3.0 and the results of the forum discussion over the Christmas break.
The general consensus from the forum feedback and the meeting was to focus on the merge from MU, custom post types, improving the front end menus, the new default theme, and fixing bugs.

Could this get blessed as a canonical plugin?

We shouldn’t strip too much out of core, else we’ll get “WTF, why can’t WordPress do X?” even if X is handled by a canonical plugin. However I wouldn’t consider private posts one of these “must have” features that someone would use to compare WordPress to another CMS. Get my +1.
